Following Mase and Reese’ story on the previous two books on Rosemary Beach series, come Captain’s own story as book #13 on the series. Captain was first introduced on Forever Too Far (it is Rush-Blaire’s book #3) and we got to know about him a little bit more during When You’re Back. I was a little indifferent to him before since his appearance every time emanated this darkling aura that I could not comprehend. I am used to sweet, flirty, and playful heroes in this series. So Captain was a new color that I didn’t think I was ready to add to the circle of lovely boys of Rosemary Beach. This book proved different, though.

Synopsis

River Joshua Kipling changed his name into Captain the year his world turned upside down. Losing the love of his life led him to not only a crushed dream but just entirely crushed everything. When given a choice to continue his life in some eerily dangerous way, Captain grabbed the chance without much consideration. Besides, what would make a better way to get over his past fatal failure than paying it off through some late odd redemption? Captain sought after peace but apparently the path he took only eases an ounce of his everlasting burden; it even stole the last remaining piece of heart he had that to love again was simply no longer possible.
Opening a new restaurant should be the way to leave the dark road behind, but Captain knew it won’t be long before he took off from Rosemary Beach and find the real peace he had never found for years in his own way. His plan eventually met a bump when Rose Henderson came to town to be one of the new servers in his restaurant. Surely Rose was pretty but nothing about her should make any differences to Captain than any other girls, should it? Yet her laugh did. As well as that big determination vibrating from her petite body. It got Captain to abandon his own rule to fall for someone new. But the more he looked through her glasses; he could practically see that behind the gleam of determination there was also a mix of fear, desperation, and hopeful shining off her eyes. Rose hid something; that was for sure. About what, that’s what Captain had to figure out on the limited days he got in town. Captain knew the mystery he was about to unravel would alter his plan, but altered or not, he would never expect to bump with the very thing he tried to forget all those dark years.

I haven’t picked up NA for weeks so I’m really excited to start it again with Abbi Glines’ book. When it came to NA, I could always count on her to get the list all checked. Hidden mystery, fiercely possessive hero, lovable heroine, tear-jerking episodes, melt-my-heart-to-pieces romance, and heartwarming ending; all would be easily found in her books. The Best Goodbye was no different.

Characters

Captain’s character came out strong. With a basic knowledge of his hard personality from previous encounter, I found Captain’s narration intriguing when he unraveled the reason he’d lost his heart years ago. He did it by revealing bit by bit information instead of giving away the whole story for us to deal and that’s absolutely an intriguing point the readers couldn’t resist but clinging tightly on. His possessiveness towards what belongs to his only underlined the fierce trait Captain had within. That’s why I thought that the insecurity he was described of having sometimes didn’t quite fit his persona. But still, Captain made a swoonworthy hero, especially that he didn’t have much unnecessary man-drama like Rush or Mase except for his insecurity. Rose’s tough personality made a perfect highlight in Captain’s domineering aura. I liked that Abbi opted for strong heroine this time. After Reese’s insecure-turn-fighter character, it’s great to meet Rose and her bravery. I liked her from the start, and I liked her even more whenever she showed her selfless and devoted side again and again.

Simple Plot, Perfect Delivery

Some flashback scenes of the past were slipped to strengthen the feeling during particular present scenes. I found myself holding back my tears every time I read that part and had to eventually give up at some point. With a basically simple plot, Abbi made a great job hiding what should be hidden and pulled the readers on the edge of their seats wondering what had actually happened on the past. She didn’t necessarily save the mystery to be unraveled on one mind-blowing revelation scene yet when the truth did came out, I could still find myself aching and even crying. The scene was written very well that all the emotions were captured and the moment got me drowning into the sorrow along with the characters.

My Issue(s)

The story went on in fast pace and though I liked it like that, I thought the second half of the book was a bit rushed. There was scene that even if not essentially affected the main story, was obviously omitted. It was done roughly that I couldn’t help but noticing it anyway. I knew it’s not necessary in some ways but still, it bothered me a little that I noticed it.

Final Thought(s)

The ending was perfect! Each character had agreed to come clean and started again on clean slate. I loved the message they delivered through the epilogue: that there would always be bumps coming our way but when you had already set your eyes on your favorite kind of ending, there would be nothing to stop you. Not your pain; it couldn’t define you. Not your mistake; it couldn’t dictate you. The Best Goodbye gives a good romance with enough twists for them who want a read to swoon and cry over.

Next on the Series

There was a promise of the future for the long run that I really wished to see. And also a glimpse of what coming on Rosemary Beach next. God I couldn’t believe it but I actually am excited to read Nan’s story. Maybe it’s because the fact that Abbi would pair her with Major (who I found really charming) or the fact that Abbi could always turn someone hateful worth loving in the end. It could be both.

ABBI GLINES IS BACK with the sequel of Mase and Reese story!
I was so dang excited to get my hands on this book. I loved this couple and Abbi made the wait difficult by leaving a snippet of name in the end of the book When I’m Gone. I decided to put this book on my top list of July’s reads to make a great start for this month… only to be any more curious for the next book!
When Reese finally agreed to move in with Mase, it meant they were up to new challenge coming in their future way. It took a long way for Reese to finally agree to move to the ranch and left Rosemary Beach behind. Now that they’re together, they would do anything so nothing got in their way again. And hard they tried, but there were moments when everything became too much making Mase and Reese realized that sometimes in a relationship, it wasn’t just about fighting threats coming from the outside, but those coming from the inside might be the most destructive threat if not dealt wisely.
Like before, Reese’s character hooked me in. I liked her in When I’m Gone and I liked her more in When You’re Back. I know I said once that insecure girl isn’t really attractive anymore that a lot of authors tended to use the personality on their heroine lately. But Abbi Glines is a master of creating insecure heroine and turning them into fighters. She made insecure girls bearable and even made my heart ache reading them. Reese was a girl whose miserable past had shaped her into this insecure-uncertain girl with trust issue. Something happened during her childhood ruined her perspective to see her future where they’d be highly possible bright path for her. It’s really good to see her trying to work her way out of the dark clouds this time. While in previous book, she was this confused girl searching for something/someone to hold on to, finally met Mase, and surprised us with her brave act in the end, this time it was about Reese figuring things out in her relationship with Mase. It was about her seeing the worth within herself that deserved every ounce of Mase’s sincere love.
As for Mase, I had mixed feeling for him. I really liked him in When I’m Gone but in this book, he kind of failed to remind me why I loved him in the first place on the first several chapters. I know how he loved Reese fiercely but he’s just too much of a good guy to reject people’s appearance in his life, even the bad ones. This indulgent side of him reminded me of Rush Finlay somehow. Rush loved Blaire just as fierce, but when Nan came around and pulled on some crazy acts, he often used to rush to get to Nan and left Blaire behind when Blaire actually needed him the most. Rush didn’t mean bad, he just sometimes didn’t know how to handle being a good boyfriend and a good family. Mase was like that in this book. I disliked him a bit for that considering Reese had too much on her plate to deal with things like fighting for Mase’s attention when she so deserved it without asking.
I expected this book would totally focus on Mase and Reese working out their relationship together. But Abbi slipped on story of the others in there, too. It was fine though, since Kiro/Emily’s story was heartbreaking yet so good. But I wish more of Mase and Reese. It’s like Mase’s side story took bigger portion than Mase and Reese’s itself. With appearance of new characters, somehow, this book felt like a stepping stone for another story of them coming up. Don’t get me wrong, I’m so excited for another book on Rosemary Beach series but again I say I wish to read more of Mase and Reese.
I liked some of the side characters, though. Major, for example was so much fun. I really really wish to read a story of him one day! And, oh! Mase’s mother was the best! I liked that she always knew what to do to help her son get in the right side of the road. It’s kind of cute though to see it this way, that Mase, the hot-gorgeous-sexy-fearless cowboy Mase seemed like always get in his momma’s rescue when things went too wrong ;)
The ending had a bit of ‘cliffhanger’ feel. Well, not between the couple though because Mase and Reese got their happy ends here (yay!). It’s something related to them and the last page had me sensing a whole new plot coming and would probably alter Mase and Reese’s story in the future. Also, there were a lot of parts that left a bit hanging but I’m pretty much sure, being Abbi, she’d probably come out with a lot of new story built from these ‘unfinished’ parts. And that’s why I said I became more and more excited of what would come in the future of the Rosemary Beach series!
Next book would be about Captain, Blaire’s brother, who’s Mase’s frenemy here. I kind of disliked his role in this book but eventually… I got it! I was surprised, really, knowing his secret. Well, I wish to get to know more about him on his own book and hopefully he got something that would make me love him like I love the other heroes on this series!

Book Review: When I'm Gone (Rosemary Beach #11) by Abbi Glines

When I'm Gone (Rosemary Beach #11)

BIG YAY for another amazing book from my favorite ever after romance series: Rosemary Beach!

We read bit and pieces about Mase Colt Manning during Harlow’s story on Take A Chance and ever since we always dreamed of him having his own book one day. Abbi Glines, being my favorite awesome author and all, made it come true. I read the excerpt months ago and instantly hooked with the newcomer heroine, Reese. I knew that I’d love her…

Edited by me ;)
Growing up in an abusive environment, Reese Ellis had known all her life that men and trust did not work on the same frame. They were the perfect picture of undeserving of loyalty and untrustworthy creatures. Men always looked at women no more than their outward appearance. Her step father taught her that. Guys from school taught her that. People around her had made sure that nothing of her worth loving aside her naturally gorgeous body. The fact that she was suffering an undiagnosed learning disorder only added another dark layer to her pile of insecurities. That’s why even if she finally escaped the awful past behind, Reese was still being haunted by uncontrollable insecure feeling everywhere she went. But Rosemary Beach, where she chose to rebuild her life, offered a new experience and comfort she’d never felt. Not only she was able to get a job that paid her well to secure the rent and bills, she also managed to make a best friend ―which was a guy, there. Reese never thought she would meet the day when men creatures finally made use of the hearts they had inside. Well, in this new place her perspective changed 180 degrees along with the appearance of a gentle cowboy from Texas.
When Mase Manning woke up to the horrifying singing, he wanted no more than giving a hard time to whoever ruined his day that morning. Instead, he was faced with a housemaid whose face was innocent yet had the most wonderful body a woman could ever ask. The girl had his mind melted and his body frozen on the spot. On their second encounter, he found her in a problem yet still managed to hold on tight on her responsibility to the job. That moment, Mase realized that Reese was more than just a gorgeous lady in the outside. That time, he fully recognized honesty and purity in Reese’s eyes the same time he caught fear there as well. For the first time in his life, he wanted nothing more than fix anything that went wrong in Reese’s world. Even when Reese tried hard to show her independency, Mase still wanted her to let him embrace her with his protectiveness.

When the thing from her past was slowly showing in front of Mase, Reese couldn’t help but feeling dreadful that Mase would act just like any other men: leaving her. Moreover if Mase found out the ugly scar and the ever-haunting insecurities behind her outward beauty, would Mase still want her? Would Mase still be willing to go back and forth to Texas and Rosemary Beach for her? She didn’t know that. What she did know was when he’s gone, she longed him to come back soon to her.

When I’m Gone was quick to be my favorite of the series, the second top after Rush and Blaire’s story. As always, Abbi wrote a heart-melting romance with a spark of heart-clenching background story to the characters. The reason I fell in love with this story lied on the characters. Mase was truly a gentleman. Never once he judged Reese for her lacking ever since he first found out about it. He breathed loyalty and sincerity when it came to his beloved one. Just like the character Grant, he’s a fixer to the bone. He saw a problem and went all out to fix it until it’s totally wrapped up neatly without a trace.

Compared to the other heroines in Rosemary Beach series, my soft spot went right straight to Reese. She had the sorriest past among the others yet her heart remained innocent. Her strong insecure feeling reminded me of Jesse from Sea Breeze series.
I loved loved loved this couple. Reese might be one insecure girl but she always tried to make her way to go independent whenever she could. She didn’t just let people taking care of her. Meeting Mase had brought out the fighting sense inside her and she actually looked awesome like that. And as for Mase, he was a gentleman and a rationalist at the same time. He loved Reese fiercely but not blindly. It’s really cool of him, I think.

I finished this book in one sitting in a record time because I was just so excited ever since the day the cover was revealed. Loved it seeing the other Rosemary Beach couples living their good life. Ah, I kind of missed them all…
Well, despite every lovely thing about this book, Abbi still managed to slip some upsetting Nan scenes. God, I hate her so much I have no idea if I’m going to love her story when she’s gonna have her own book one day. But I loved Mase’s rant here. Hopefully it would knock some sense to her bitchy mind… Oh but Abbi always has this magic trick of turning a hateful character into a lovable one (She proved it through Jesse on Sea Breeze series) so yeah.
And OH DO NOT get me started with the ending!

Edited by me ;)
I cried the moment Reese showed her intention of fight for Mase innocently. It’s so touching I loved them so much! It seemed like Abbi’s fave style nowadays to wreck the readers’ minds with a name (God, she did it on You Were Mine!! asdhfsafhkl!!). The last one sentence made a perfect cliffhanger that made the long-wait for When You’re Back even harder. Read this book people and just don’t try to skip into the last page, okay? *wink*

p.s. Rush is still my favorite! This is why...
